Love to Code

This week I want to talk about living your best life by doing what you love. Yes, you can make six figures as a Microsoft ASP.NET Developer but you should also love to code!

My personal motto is “if you’re not having fun, what’s the point?” I try very hard to have fun with everything that I do. The reason I do this is because I used to be miserable and during that time in my life I was constantly unemployed. Part of my constant unemployment was due to the breakdown of the economy but I think a large part of it was due to my attitude. I had let life get to me and I lost my confidence. No one wants to hire a person who is unpleasant to be around.

It took a long time but I sorted out my priorities and realized that I love to code. I took it upon myself to buy books and do some self training. These were the days before YouTube and online training [read: old lady voice] so self training was the only option available to me. I had a degree in Computer Science but by the time I graduated college, the classic ASP and ColdFusion skills I had learned were already out of date. So, I did market research to see what skills in web development were the most marketable and that’s how I began my career as a Microsoft ASP.NET web developer.

Any day I can write code is a good day. The one thing that no one ever says about Microsoft ASP.NET web development is that it is a creative effort. There are many different ways to approach a solution and it is up to the web developer to sort out the best approach for the technical and business specifications. It’s like a giant puzzle that you need to figure out and I love every minute of it!

My point is simple: although you can make six figures as a Microsoft ASP.NET web developer, you should only approach that as a career if you love to code. When you love to code, your enthusiasm will take you far!
