Questions to Ask During an Interview

Over the past few weeks, I have talked about the first steps you should take to get an interview including creating an outstanding cover letter, creating a resume that works, finding jobs on job boards, and dealing with recruiters. Now let’s review some questions to ask during an interview!

#1 Do you offer continuing education and professional training?

I think this is a question you must ask. I have always had the most success with companies that offer continuing education because development is always changing and you must keep your skills current. If you are expected to do continuing education on your own time, that is a red flag that the company does not provide a good work-life balance.

#2 What are some challenges that I will face in this position?

This is a great question because it shows that you are realistic and welcome challenges. No job is perfect and it’s best to know what you’re up against before you accept the position.

#3 What can you tell me about your plans for growth?

My #1 rule is to stay away from companies that are currently experiencing rapid growth or are moving towards an IPO. I have worked for multiple companies that were unable to contain their rapid growth and everyone was overworked and miserable. Companies that are undergoing an IPO effort will have to be audited. My experience is that these companies start to micromanage their employees which is not a good environment to be in.

#4 What have you enjoyed most about working here?

If the interviewer’s answer is “I do not enjoy working here” then you should slowly back away! You don’t want to work for a company if the interviewer doesn’t even enjoy working there!

#5 What are the next steps in the interview process?

This should always be your last question. It shows that you are interested in the position and would like to prepare yourself for the next step in the interview process.

Remember during any interview that you need to ask questions so that you find a good fit for yourself. Don’t just take any job (unless you absolutely need to). Continue to build up your resume and it will take you far!
