When you are first starting out in the development industry, it can be very difficult to get your first junior developer job. There is a lot of competition out there and you need to make yourself as appealing as possible to potential employers. Even if you do not have a college degree, these simple tips can help you get your first junior developer job!
Freelance Work for Small Businesses
The way I got my start in web development was by landing short term independent contracts with small businesses. You can find jobs like this on all of the major tech job boards and many small businesses hire independent contractors to build websites. You want to do the best job possible so that your client continues to use your services for maintenance issues. I also used to throw in training and documentation as a “free bonus” which was something my clients loved!
Internships
I am not a huge fan of unpaid internships but they can be a good method of getting some real world experience to build your portfolio. There are also paid internships and if you can find one you should definitely apply for it. Internships also look good on your resume and can get you in the door for a junior developer job after you graduate from college or finish your training.
Networking
The best thing that you can do for yourself and your career is networking. And by networking, I mean building up a network of professional contacts. Maybe your parents, relatives, or friends are established as developers or maybe they know someone who is. LinkedIn is a good way to build your professional network and if you do not already have a profile, you should set one up. I have found people on LinkedIn in my industry who are connected to me through other people I know. You never know what doors will open for you and you want to make sure you know as many people as possible who may open them.
Career Fairs
You can find career fairs through your university, local businesses and organizations, or virtually. I have attended both local and virtual career fairs and they proved valuable. It is an opportunity for you to speak to recruiters from multiple companies in a very short span of time. It’s kind of like speed dating for interviews!
University Career Services
If you are attending (or have attended) a university, chances are they have a career services office. They should have job listings and may even help you with the application process. Always take advantage of university services, the cost of these services are included in your tuition so you are paying for them!
Remember to prepare yourself with an outstanding cover letter, resume, and portfolio website. Continue applying for jobs and interviewing. Stay positive and eventually you will get your first junior developer job!
