What Skills Do You Need to Move From Developer to Senior Developer?

What Skills Do You Need to Move From Developer to Senior Developer? The answer goes beyond learning another programming language, framework, or technical tool. To advance into a senior role, you need to strengthen your technical expertise while also developing skills in problem-solving, communication, ownership, decision-making, and mentoring. These are the skills that help you become someone your team can depend on for more than just writing code.

Improve Your Technical Skills

Obviously, a senior developer needs to have deep knowledge about the technologies they work with. But one person does not necessarily have to know everything.

What matters is an understanding of the reasons things work and how. Try to learn more about application architecture, design patterns, testing, security, performance, databases, APIs, deployment, and everything related to technologies you use.

Also, try to get used to solving problems without a straightforward solution. Senior developers are usually the first people other developers come to when there are problems.

Become an Owner

The main difference between a senior developer and a regular developer is that you need to be an owner. It means instead of waiting for instructions to follow, try to find a place where the task fits into the whole picture and analyze all possible risks and possibilities.

If there are any recurring issues in the codebase or development process, raise the problem and offer a solution.

Improve Communication Skills

The ability to communicate effectively becomes especially important in case of moving to a senior position. It may be necessary to explain some decisions to other developers, to product managers, to clients, or other teams. Not everyone will have the same technical background, so you will need to adjust the way of communicating accordingly.

Good communication implies being able to document the decisions, ask questions in case of doubts about the requirements, and raise red flags before the problems arise.

Develop Skills in Making Technical Decisions

As a senior developer, you are expected to assist in making decisions about application architecture, used tools, libraries, and approach of implementation. Not only are you supposed to have your own personal vision of things, but you need to understand the advantages and disadvantages of every solution.

Just being a supporter of the latest technology doesn’t make it the best choice. You should consider maintainability, security, performance, costs, and many other aspects while choosing the solutions to be applied in practice.

Explaining why you choose one option over another is a key skill of a senior developer.

Mentor Other Developers

You don’t have to be a team manager to mentor other developers. Make thoughtful reviews of pull requests, answer questions, share your experience, and show juniors why one way is better than another.

Mentoring other developers will also help to improve your skills because explaining things to someone else forces you to think more deeply about those things.

Have an Overall Understanding of The Project

A senior developer should understand the consequences of their work as it affects the whole company. A technical decision can affect customers, security, support, infrastructure, deadlines, costs, and everything else. Try to ask questions about why your team builds something and for what problem it is made for.

The aim is not just to complete assigned tasks but to understand how your work contributes to the success of the project. Becoming a senior developer does not depend on the amount of time you spend on writing code. It depends on the combination of your technical depth, ownership, communication, good judgment, and your ability to make the people around you more successful.

Start acquiring the mentioned skills even before you have the title of a senior developer, and you will already perform most of the tasks expected from senior developers.
