I am happy to announce that the Lead Developer Career Guide is available now from the Manning Publications Early Access Program (MEAP)! In this book, you will learn the skills you need to be a lead developer, with expert advice on mentoring teams, handling clients and project managers, and keeping your head in emergencies.
I originally pitched this book to Manning Publications in October 2022. The process went pretty quickly and I started writing the book in November 2022. We are planning 12 chapters for this book and the first 5 chapters are available now for early access. This is the first book that I’m writing for a publisher but I have self-published several eBooks in the past. I want to thank the team at Manning, they have taken great care of me as a first-time author. There have also been probably over 30 people involved in this book including the editors, reviewers, the marketing team, and more. I never knew how much work went into publishing a book, it’s a lot!
This book is a passion project for me because I struggled so much the first time I became a Lead Developer. There are no reputable resources for developers to learn leadership, most tech leadership books focus on engineering/development managers which is a completely different role. Lead Developers are expected to have a balance of expert technical skills with the soft skills necessary to be a good leader. Lead Developers generally get the job because of their technical skills and then they have to learn soft skills on the job which is very difficult.
The topics I cover in this book include:
- What a lead developer does
- Writing effective technical documentation
- Improving development processes
- Communicating with non-technical clients
- Mentoring and inspiring a team
- Delivering negative feedback
When you purchase this book through the MEAP, you will have access to a live discussion forum where you can leave feedback to help me make adjustments as needed and improve the quality of the book before the final publication. You can access it via live book in a web browser, or download the eBook as a PDF or Kindle format. I hope this book helps you to struggle less than I did when I first became a Lead Developer.
